Replacing deteriorating enterprise applications is expensive and risky.  To ensure new enterprise applications are as durable as other business assets requires a ''modular" architecture enabling applications to continue working even as environments change.  The longevity of enterprise applications is dependent upon well-defined interfaces and good standards.
